100 days until Orkney Island Games begin

Athletes from Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney and Sark will be among 2,000 heading to Orkney this July for the 2025 Island Games.

24 island teams from across the globe will compete in 12 sports between 12 - 18 July.

The group of islands in Northern Scotland have never hosted an Island Games since they began in 1985.

The sports included are: Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Bowls, Cycling, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Sailing, Squash, Swimming, and Triathlon.

Preparations for 2025 have proven tricky, because of the cost and logistics of travel from the Channel Islands and the demand from athletes for places to stay.

Guernsey's footballers won't be going to the Orkney games, after the Guernsey FA said it was unable to find suitable accommodation.

The 1272 medals that will be presented this summer will feature the Standing Stones of Stenness, an iconic Orkney landmark, sketched by 23-year-old Jodie Brown.

The vibrant ribbon, which features Orkney's flag colours, was designed by Olivia Yorston.

The Director of Orkney 2025, Kirsty Talbot, is very happy with the designs.

“Orkney is a thriving hub for creatives, attracting artists, writers, musicians, and craftspeople from across the globe.

"It is therefore extremely fitting that the medals designed for the athletes of Orkney 2025 celebrate Orkney’s iconic landscape and will be a perfect tribute to the winning athletes who compete in our Games.

"With only 100 days to go until we welcome the world, excitement is building and we are very much looking forward to creating positive memories which will last a lifetime.”

The opening ceremony in Kirkwall will take place on 12 July and will be hosted by Scottish television presenter Lorraine Kelly.

Guernsey hosted the previous Island Games in 2023, winning the most medals, 145.  Jersey finished second in the table with 126.
