12,000 flags handcrafted for Guernsey's 80th Liberation celebrations

The Guernsey Liberation Community Bunting Project will see St Peter Port and St Sampsons decorated with handcrafted bunting.

Guernsey will celebrate 80 years of freedom from German Occupation on 9 May 2025.

Guernsey woman Megs Bailey wanted to mark the milestone anniversary in a unique way and launched a community project in May 2024.

She wanted islanders to craft enough bunting to stretch from the Weighbridge to the Slaughterhouse.

Her idea had 'a tremendous amount of support' and she has received a lot more bunting than expected.

"There will be enough to go from Salerie Corner to the Slaughterhouse and back again.

"We have two strips between all those lamp-posts and we’ve also got enough to decorate the Bridge as well.

"We’re going around the corner of the marina side of the Bridge and hopefully have some strips along the middle of the Bridge as well - it is going to be lovely."

She says the ‘Make do and Mend’ theme has saved over 250 kilos of fabric from going to landfill.

"There’s such a selection and such a range of fabrics and colours it is brilliant, people have been very generous.

"We've had whole vaults of fabric donated, old duvets, curtains and shirts. It’s been great fun.

"Everyone who has worked on this project has said, without exception, that they have loved being involved.

"It has taken off beyond my expectations."
