500 Liberation hampers for Guernsey's Occupation generation

500 islanders who remained in Guernsey or were evacuated during the Second World War will receive a gift hamper this Liberation Day.

The hampers will contain tea, scones, Gâche, jam, milk, butter, cream, and a traditional ration card.

They're being provided jointly by the States' Education, Sport and Culture Committee, the Guernsey Dairy and Collas Crill advocates.

This is the third year the wartime generation has received the bundle of goods.

Deputy Sue Aldwell says the hampers are a 'token of our appreciation'.

“It’s a great initiative to help them get in the Liberation Day spirit, even more so as we commemorate such a significant milestone.”

Guernsey Dairy's Managing Director Andrew Tabel says he is pleased to continue this tradition.

“Individual hampers will include fresh Guernsey milk, butter and cream, to complement Senners scones and Guernsey Gâche.

"The individual hampers have been a great success over the last two years and aim to reach a larger proportion of islanders who experienced the hardships 80 years ago."

Islanders over 80 and who live at home need to register by emailing hampers@collascrill.com or by calling 01481 734874 between 1–28 April.

Some form of ID will need to be shown when the hamper is collected from Beau Sejour on Friday 9 May from 8.30-11.30am.

Liberation Day organisers are operating a separate initiative for islanders who are living in residential homes or attend Age Concern groups.
