Initiative launches to get 'busy Guernsey parents' more active

Two bikes have been installed at Beau Sejour for 'busy parents' to use while their children swim.

The Health Improvement Commission hopes having free-to-use exercise equipment overlooking the pool will allow parents a brief window of time to be active while their children participates in a club.

The 2023 Guernsey and Alderney Wellbeing Survey found a lack of leisure time prevented parents from being more active.

Adult Physical Activity Officer Sam Green says even a few minutes of exercise can improve physical and mental health.

“We know it can be difficult for busy parents to find time to be active, especially when juggling their children's activities.

"Dropping off children at some of these activities might provide a brief window of time for parents to be active if convenient opportunities are available.

"Our goal is to create and promote these opportunities, making it easier for parents to be active."

Sam says they plan to expand the Active Spectators initiative.

“We want to work with parents and clubs to understand activities they would like and what would work well for that particular setting.

"Ideas could include instructor led sessions, parent led sessions, walking and running groups or providing ideas for parents to follow and be active on their own."

Parents can complete a short survey on activities they would like to see, where and when.
