Jersey have won the 2024 Muratti Vase for a fifth consecutive time after beating Guernsey 3-2 in extra time at Springfield stadium.

A goal in extra time for Jersey's Lorne Bickley helped the home side to lift the inter-island title for a 59th time. 

The first 30 minutes of the match saw chances for both teams, forcing the goalkeepers of both islands to make saves. Jersey came the closest to taking the lead through Lorne Bickley, who forced Guernsey goalkeeper Josh Addison to parry it in front of his goal, but Jersey couldn't find the back of the net.

Guernsey took the lead in the 40th minute through Matt Loaring, who poked home from a Charlton Gauvin free kick.

Jersey equalised immediately in the 42nd minute with a Fraser Barlow header after Lorne Bickley headed the ball across from a Jonny Le Quesne cross, meaning the sides were level at the break.

Early in the second half, Jersey's Fraser Barlow hit the woodwork from a Jonny Le Quesne cross, but captain Luke Campbell scored a header from a James Carr cross shortly after.

Just a minute later, Karl Hinds' shot hit the crossbar to prevent Jersey from extending their lead. 

Guernsey's Owen Wallbridge forced a near-post reaction save from Jersey goalkeeper Euan Van Der Vliet to keep the Jersey team ahead. 

In the final few minutes of additional time, Guernsey substitute Will Fazakerley saw his low curling shot end up in the bottom corner of the Jersey goal to send the match to extra time. 

It was a tense start to extra time with neither team creating any real chances. 

The crowd at Springfield in the 105th minute saw Lorne Bickley score off a strong save made by Addison to deny Luke Watson's header. 

Bickley's extra time winner means that Jersey have now won the Muratti Vase five times in a row.

The match was a Muratti final managerial debut for Jersey's Elliot Powell and Guernsey's joint managers Ryan-Zico Black and Dave Merris. 

Jersey have now won the Muratti final 59 times with Guernsey being successful on 47 occasions. 

After lifting the Muratti Vase winning manager Elliot Powell spoke about his players' determination to keep on pushing right until the final whistle: 

"The resilience in that group, I've seen in the summer and I saw it in bucket loads today.

So (it’s) a testament to their character, it's a testament to the professionalism of all the lads to bounce back so quickly.

Special mention to Fraser Barlow to be so switched on, so soon after the disappointment of conceding, to be at the back post to do his job, that kind of sums the lads up today.”

Joint Manager for Guernsey Ryan-Zico Black says, despite not winning, there was a great atmosphere.

"The team spirit, the morale and the positivity around the place was really good all the way through. In football you win and sometimes you lose, that's just the way it is and you have got to accept that."

There was success for Guernsey earlier on in the day though, with the Guernsey women winning the Muratti for the first time in 16 years with a 2-0 win over Jersey.
