Plans released for Alderney's harbour area

The Braye masterplan includes new shopping and commercial outlets as well as port improvements.

Masterplans are a tool used by urban designers to offer a vision of how an area could be developed.

The one for Alderney is a framework for transforming the harbour and western end of the Braye Bay in partnership with the commercial and business community, investors and developers.

Alderney politician Bruce Woodhead says more shops and businesses are one idea, while changing the inner harbour is another:

"There are suggestions with the inner harbour that we put a bar across it, to make it into a mini marina."

He says Alderney may have to handle a bigger ship carrying diesel for the power station in the next few years which could change the look of the harbour:

"The oil delivery boat is going to stop shortly, within the next four or five years, and will increase in size, and that may cause us a problem. We do need to look at upgrading the commercial dock area."

Islanders can look at the plans and discuss them with States Members at the Island Hall on Saturday 27 April between 10 and 1.
