Roads Impassable As High Winds Bring Down Trees

Several roads are blocked by fallen trees and debris, as strong winds have battered the Channel Islands overnight.

Gusts of up to seventy miles and hour have been recorded by Jersey Met at St Helier Harbour.

The Goodwill freight ship took shelter north of Sark at around 3am rather than attempting to get into St Peter Port.

An orange level warning for winds up to severe gale force nine is in place for the Channel Islands area.

States of Jersey Police said it was receiving numerous reports of roads that were impassable.

Motorists were being warned to take extra care on the roads and allow more time for their journeys.

Jersey's Les Quennevais Sports Centre is closed due to damage to the building caused by the high winds:

The Co-op at Sion in St John has also lost part of its roof.
