Taxi fares in Guernsey set to rise by 4.75%

It's proposed taxi fares in Guernsey rise by 4.75% from 25 November 2024.

Environment & Infrastructure is inviting islanders to have their say on the increase in fares.

A standard two-mile journey om Tariff 1 (normal daytime hours) would cost £6.50, an extra 40p, whereas a five-mile trip on Tariff 2 (evenings) would be £1 more, at £24.10.

A one-mile journey on the standard rate would be £3.25, or £4.82 on Tariff 2.

Islanders could also have to pay 'evening and public holiday tariffs' by 7.00 pm on a Friday, rather than 10.00 pm.

The E&I committee wants to change the taxi tariff structure to encourage more drivers to work at times with greater demand.

Other tariff changes include:

  • Applying the evening/public holidays tariff (tariffs 2, 4 and 6) to all day on Saturday, and/or all day on Sunday;
  • Remove the 60p surcharge currently in place for Sundays;
  • Start the evening/public holidays tariff (tariffs 2, 4 and 6) at 6.00 pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve;
  • Amend the tariff seating capacity categories from 1-4 passengers, 5-7 passengers and 8 passengers to 1-4, 5-6 and 7-8, as although the same type of vehicle could be used for 5 or 6 passengers, normally a larger vehicle is required for 7 or 8 passengers.

The committee says its annual review of fares takes account of taxi operating costs and Guernsey's average earnings.

Guernsey's last inflation rate is due out next week. In June it was 5.3%.

Islanders can comment on the planned tariff changes by emailing passengertransport@gov.gg before 1 November.

Taxi fares were last increased by 7.67% on 27 November 2023, and before that - in April 2023 - by 4.51%.

Previous increases were 5.35% in April 2022 and 3.34% in January 2022.
