10,000 beer mats signposting islanders to mental health services rolled out in Jersey pubs

Beer mats telling islanders not to 'bottle it up' are popping up in Jersey pubs.

This is part of a campaign from Thrive Jersey and Switch Digital, aiming to prevent suicide in young men in particular.

The mats have the message 'Don't Bottle it Up', alongside a list of support services islanders can turn to.

Randalls and Liberation pubs will be stocking the mats next week.

Andy Le Seelleur, from Thrive Jersey, tells us why it is being rolled out now:

"Looking at the research about male suicide, they can peak especially amongst young males, when big sporting events are happening, rates can increase.

"Particularly after a big sporting event has finished as well, you lose that sense of community in a pub, which can leave a kind of emptiness in some people.

"The mats are basically saying don't bottle it up. The mats really do give some simple advice about what to do if you're struggling.

"Seek support, support is more available now than it was 5 - 10 years ago, get out of your comfort zone, do something for yourself and just share."
