£12,000 Lost To Family Text Scam

In just one week, £12,000 has been lost to text scams which claim to be a family member in need.

Parents have been the main target of these texts and WhatsApp messages, with criminals claiming to be their son or daughter needing help.

Eight reports have been made to Jersey Police about these scams over the past week.

The texts usually state that they are texting from a new number because they have smashed or broken their phone.

Once the victim responds, the con-artists will ask for money.

If islanders see texts like this, officers say they should not send money or personal details and should ignore the message.

People can double-check by calling the person being impersonated on their regular phone number to check before any action is taken.
