21 homes evacuated at Le Geyt after another suspected gas leak

People have been evacuated from their homes following a suspected gas leak in St Helier.

21 homes at the Le Geyt estate near Springfield Road have been vacated as a precaution by Jersey Fire & Rescue.

Island Energy and the emergency services are working on the site of the incident so it is 'dealt with as swiftly as possible'.

St Saviour's Road remains open but is down to one lane of traffic.

Islanders are being asked to avoid the area to reduce disruption.

An Island Energy spokesperson says its team follows a 'very strict' policy and procedure in the event of a gas escape.

"When called to attend, [we] use highly sensitive gas detection equipment, and follow a thorough investigation process on all callouts.

"We monitor inside and outside properties within a wide radius to ensure safety.

 "We would like to thank the residents of the area for their understanding and cooperation and reassure them we are doing everything possible to get them back into their homes as quickly and safely as possible."

The latest incident follows a confirmed gas leak in St Clement before Christmas in 2024.

Clos Mourant was evacuated after a fractured gas pipe caused gas to leak into a residential building through the utility ducts.

IE CEO Graeme Millar told Channel 103 at the time, that Island Energy takes responsibility for gas on the island incredibly seriously.

"It's our number one priority. We’re spending a lot of money on maintaining and upgrading our network.

"I would encourage gas users to make sure all their appliances are regularly serviced and maintained."

Islanders who suspect they smell gas should call Island Energy’s 24-hour emergency line, on 01534 755 555, immediately and follow the advice below:

  • Call Island Energy immediately on 01534 755 555 (ideally, leave the property to call);
  • Open doors and windows to ventilate;
  • Turn off gas appliances and, if possible, switch off the gas supply at the emergency control valve (next to your gas meter or on the gas cylinder);
  • Extinguish all naked flames and cigarettes;
  • DO NOT use naked flames or smoke;
  • DO NOT use any electrical appliances or turn electrical switches on OR off;
  • DO NOT use the doorbell;
  • DO NOT message Island Energy via their website or e-mail about an emergency. Call immediately on 01534 755 555.
