Islanders can now bid on ten pieces of sea-themed artwork, from artists including Nicholas Romeril and Tim Le Breuilly, in an auction organised by the RNLI.

Artists have donated their works of art to help raise money for the lifesaving sea rescue charity as part of celebrations to mark its 200th anniversary.

The RNLI has filled the window of an empty shop on Queen Street with the artwork, hoping it will be admired by passers-by who'll be tempted to place a bid online.

The pieces include Nicholas Romeril's ‘Too Rough to Go’, which has already reached £2600.

Another lot is 'Rescue of a famous duo at Corbière' by Russell Layton, which has a current bid of £3600.

Mike Edwards, a crew member who organised the event, says they are immensely honoured that everyone involved has given up their valuable time and demonstrated their amazing talent to support the RNLI in this historic year.

"Thank you on behalf of RNLI Jersey to everyone who has helped bring this to fruition.

"We hope that islanders will be inspired by these unique and beautiful pieces of art. Your favourite one could be hanging on your wall in just a few weeks!"

Kirsten Morel, Minister for Sustainable Economic Development, says it is a great way to bring life back to empty shops.

"The use of vacant shops and windows to enhance the vibrancy of our high street is to be celebrated."

The online auction will run until midnight on Saturday 15 June, the night of the RNLI 200 Gala Ball.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution was founded in 1824, and RNLI Jersey was set up 60 years later, in 1884.

There are two lifeboat stations in the island, one in St Helier, and the other at St Catherine's.

RNLI Jersey also has professional lifeguards on the four western beaches, St Brelade's Bay, St Ouen's Bay, Plemont, and Greve de Lecq.
