Broad Street renamed for Dementia Awareness Week

Broad Street has been renamed to raise awareness for Dementia Jersey's Boost Your Brain campaign.

The thoroughfare in St Helier has temporarily become 'Memory Lane' and has been decorated with a 30-metre-long mural.

Islanders are encouraged to view the artwork, created by ArtHouse Jersey, Dementia Jersey,Snap and Signtech, which carries important messages about the three ways you can reduce your risk of dementia.

Love your heart – Eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly and manage stress.

Stay Sharp – Challenge your brain, do hobbies you love and get enough sleep.

Keep Connected – Stay in touch with friends and family and take part in a club or group.

The mural also doubles up as a puzzle to challenge the brain.

Dementia Jersey is also giving away an iPad as part of its campaign. The Big Brain Challenge is a family-friendly scavenger hunt around the island.

In 25 different locations, people can find brain stickers with QR codes that take the user to a webpage to solve more clues and learn about mind health along the way.

CEO, Claudine Snape, says:

"We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have such creative partners who spotted this opportunity to put our campaign in the spotlight and in doing so bring vibrancy and energy to Broad Street.

"We hope visitors to Memory Lane will enjoy reading about how they can reduce their risk of dementia and take part in our Big Brain Challenge."

People in Jersey are also being reminded that their hearts are more connected to their heads than they may think.

Dementia Jersey says that research shows good cardio health is linked with reduced risks of dementia.

The charity recommends islanders pick up healthy habits for their health and well-being and to manage stress well.

This can be done by stopping unhealthy habits, such as smoking, exercising more, being social, and picking up new hobbies.
