Children Given Free Books For Coronation

Schoolchildren have been given free books to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III.

Pupil in Years 3-6 have each been gifted a copy of 'Charlie & Spud and King Charles', which is the third book in the 'Touching History' series.

The books, written by local author Penny Byrne, aim to teach the island's children about Jersey's rich history in an entertaining and accessible way.

The 'Charlie & Spud' books, created with the help of Jersey Heritage, also complement the school curriculum.

Penny Byrne says it was great to dive into the complexities of how the civil war affected our Island.

"Talking to experts from Jersey Heritage was fascinating and helped dispel some of the myths that still circulate around this part of our Island’s story."

The Bailiff, Sir Tim Le Cocq, has sponsored the book series because there was a lack of children's books about Jersey's heritage and culture.

This then led to the commission of the series as part of the Island Identity Project.

The author says it is wonderful to see how popular the Charlie & Spud series is becoming with children and schools across Jersey.

"We feel so privileged to be able to bring Jersey’s history to life in this way."
