She taught thousands of Jersey children to dance over many decades, but a legacy from the late Valerie Guy will continue to keep islanders moving.

17 sports clubs are sharing £100,000 from money the 101 year old left Jersey Sport in her will following her death in 2022.

An estimated 4,000 people who swim, run, shoot, cycle and even Lindy Hop are set to benefit from the bequest.

The SUPPORTIN SPORT fund was set up in May to help local organisations.

Jersey Sport received applications totalling more than  £200,000.  It was made the first round of awards to.

David Kennedy, CEO at Jersey Sport, described it as a huge privilege to be able to distribute the legacy money on Valerie Guy's behalf:

" This is massive for the sports community.  It is becoming harder and harder to deliver sport on a daily basis in  Jersey, with the cost of living and the cost of transport to get off-island.  It is a very competitive place when it comes to trying to attract sponsorship.

"Hopefully this will ease the burden for some of our sports."

"To have this funding allows us to really come in and support sports, to take them to the next level and to offer more opportunities - not only for their own membership, but for new people."
