Domestic Abuse 'Prevention' Campaign Launched

The Jersey Safeguarding Partnership Board has launched the second part of its three-year campaign to tackle domestic abuse across the island.

Last year's campaign focused on protection with the strapline 'Would You Know It If You Saw It'.

This year's theme, titled 'You've Seen The Signs, Now What?', is aimed at highlighting where help is available.

Domestic abuse can take many different forms including physical, emotional, financial, sexual, online, coercive control, and harassment and stalking.

It's estimated to impact one in every four women and one in every six men in their lifetime.

The Jersey Domestic Abuse Support Agency has received 711 referrals so far this year, with 361 of those classed as 'at significant risk of harm'.

The JSPB says the campaign will continue with 'initiatives at trigger points throughout the year' to help people access the support available when it's most needed.

Safeguarding officers will be at a pop-up shop at Liberty Wharf until Friday 23 October to offer advice. Therapeutic artwork from Karios Arts will also be on show.

"Domestic abuse is a very broad issue and can affect people of all genders, age, sexuality, and race. We want islanders experiencing domestic abuse to know that they are not alone and no matter what the circumstances, help, and support is available.

"Particularly in the current climate, with the potential for tighter restrictions and more time at home; this is a campaign that stands for what is at the very core objectives of JSPB – to most effectively coordinate local work to prioritise the safeguarding of vulnerable Islanders."
- Sarah Elliott, Independent Safeguarding Chair of the Board.

Marketing material is up around the island, including in schools and the hospital, to showcase the support on offer.

Islanders are also encouraged to don a purple ribbon to showcase their support. There is more information here.
