Eco-company wins tender to build floating holiday pods in Jersey marina

A company has been chosen to install two floating holiday pods in St Helier Marina.

Waterpod Ltd, a UK-based organisation, has been picked to build the pods.

The company specialises in eco-friendly floating accommodation and plans to build the short-stay homes with 100% sustainable materials.

Planning permission has been approved for six pods in total, with the rest to be rolled out if the initial two builds are successful.

Ports of Jersey is behind the project. It wants to create more accommodation in the island with a stronger connection with the harbour.

Once they're built, the pods will be available to anyone who'd like to stay in the marina, but Channel 103 has been told visiting yachtsman are among Ports of Jersey's target market.

Each pod will have nautical-inspired structures with small decks and different colour schemes, which we're told are already in the process of being built.

They will be connected to the mains, with running water and waste removal.

An air-source heat pump will also be installed, alongside solar panels and energy-efficient electrics and appliances.

Tom Luke, Director of Waterpod Ltd, tells us more about the eco-technology involved:

"All of the materials that we're using are sustainable and by sustainable we mean they're either recycled - for example the cladding elements and the decking is made out of recycled plastic or recycled woods.

"Secondly, we're using sustainable materials such as wood and timber from sustainable forests.

"Also, materials like some of the metals we use, we're going to make sure they either are recycled or can be recycled at the end of their life.

"This is important for me because of climate change - it has a negative impact on our planet and everyone needs to do their part in minimising or even reversing the impact that we're having.

"So by being energy efficient and building these pods in a sustainable way, we're minimising our impact on climate change."
