Fire Crews Warn Against Burning Waste

Jersey firefighters had to use thousands of litres of water to extinguish a fire on the first day of the island’s hosepipe ban.

Crews were called to private land on Friday because a fire, which had been lit to burn waste, was impinging on nearby trees.

The fire service says islanders should continue to avoid lighting fires because of the hosepipe ban and dry conditions which make fires more likely to spread:

"Unfortunately using water to extinguish the fire was the only viable option.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind islanders that despite recent rainfall we are still experiencing an extended dry period and island water supplies are at a reduced level.

The lighting of fires should be avoided to reduce the likelihood of a wildfire or further threat to water supplies."
