Floating holiday pods due in Jersey next month

Two floating holiday pods, which will sit in St Helier's Marina, are being built in the UK and are due to arrive in the island in November.

Waterpod Ltd, based in Berkshire, was picked in May to build the structures.

The 10m x 4.5m pods are part of a Ports of Jersey project which is aiming to eventually roll out six pods for visiting yachtsmen and anyone who fancies a short-term stay in St Helier Marina.

We're told there were a 'few design challenges' with creating the structures, but the build is well on the way.

Tom Luke, Director of Waterpod Ltd, said that the obstacles have been overcome:

"Our team has taken a huge amount of pride in building these first two Waterpods for Jersey, which are nearing completion.

"There have been a few unique design challenges, including how to deal with wastewater given the large tidal range in Jersey.

"We have developed a custom system, with extra resilience, to ensure reliability all year around."

Each pod will be inspired by the sea and be equipped with running water and waste removal. They will also be connected to the mains.

An air-source heat pump will be installed, alongside solar panels and energy-efficient electrics and appliances.

Mr Luke said this is just some of the eco-technology that will be used in the pods:

"All of the materials that we're using are sustainable, and by sustainable we mean they're either recycled - for example the cladding elements and the decking is made out of recycled plastic or recycled woods."

The floating pods will sleep up to four people,
