Further Rise For Student Finance

Jersey's students will see another rise in their maintenance grants, in time for the new academic year in September.

The 3.8% increase in payments are hoped to help ease the pressures of the cost of living crisis.

It's on top a one off 7.2% increase that was announced in October, which has now been made permanent.

The top-up will apply to all students, including

  • Students who study off-island
  • Independent students studying on-island
  • and, Dependent students studying on-island.

The change will come into effect from September 2023, a year since an uplift of 2.9% was added to the grants.

Children's and Education Minister, Deputy Inna Gardiner says the increases combined will put up to £1,072 more in students pockets compared to September 2021.

"I will also continue to work with officers to look at the system as a whole, and consider how we can provide the most fair, targeted support going forwards.

Any changes will be designed to offer the same level – or more – financial support."

Jersey's inflation rate currently sits at 12.7%, the highest in the British Isles, while the UK's RPI runs at 10.5%
