Manhole covers have been blown 30 feet in the air after a suspected gas explosion beneath Bagot Road.

The road in St Saviour has been closed to vehicles and pedestrians between the Bagot Inn pub and Les Varines.

Police are at the scene diverting traffic and buses have been re-routed.

Traffic is heavy in and around the Bagot / Longueville area due to an incident, please if you do not need to be in that area, please avoid it and find an alternative route.

Update on Bagot Road incident, some man-hole covers came out of the ground Emergency services are doing tests to see what caused it. Road closed from the Bagot Pub to Les Varines & officers are directing traffic away from the area. No injuries and updates to follow.

There are no reports of anyone being injured, but we're being urged to avoid the area until further notice.

Police are appealing for residents to stay calm:

"Occupants of properties between [The Bagot Inn and Les Varines] are asked to stay calm and stay above basement levels at this time.

"We are not evacuating properties at this stage, however, if you wanted to do so, please feel free to leave the area and follow officers’ direction."

Some emergency services have now left the scene, but the road remains closed while investigations into the cause are ongoing.

Parents heading to pick up their children from Plat Douet School are being asked to collect them from the Waitrose car park on Rue des Pres.
