Gov Told 'No More Delays' As New Pay Deal Put To Teachers

Jersey's government has made a fresh pay offer to teachers, in a bid to conclude the long-running employment dispute.

It comes after the NEU teaching union brought in lawyers when the States Employment Board told members they would be receiving its previous offer unless they opted out.

Teachers who held firm and rejected the previous government's pay deals now have a new offer to consider. If agreed, all teachers will receive:

  • a one-off £1,500 non-consolidated payment for 2023 (for all staff employed on 31st December)
  • an 8% pay rise for 2024
  • increases of either RPI+1% or of 2% in 2025 and 2026 (whichever is greater)

“NEU remained committed to an improvement in the offer that was presented, and we have been clear that our teachers in Jersey deserved better for the hard work they do.” - Caryn Symons, Senior Regional Officer.

A letter sent last month, telling teachers they would have to individually opt out of receiving the SEB's previous pay offer if they wanted to continue their right to negotiate, has been withdrawn.

While teachers in the NEU vote on the pay offer, negotiations over teachers' working conditions are ongoing.

In an email to is members, the NEU says reducing teachers' workloads will be "at the forefront of its priorities" when meetings with the SEB resume later this month.

Channel 103 understands that NASUWT members will also receive the improved offer, even though its members already voted in favour of the previous offer.

The union has told its members that it has warned the government "there can be no more delays" in giving teachers a pay rise.

A union representative said:

"Irrespective of the position of other unions, the NASUWT expects this latest offer to be implemented and will consider any withdrawal or reversion a serious situation...

"Members will not only be expecting the award but will also have budgeted for it."

The government has been approached for comment.
