Households Spend An Average £901 Per Week

Jersey's households spend an average £901 per week, according to new figures by Statistics Jersey.

Nearly a third of household incomes go on housing and energy bills, which cost around £266 per week. That's up from an average £216 in 2014.

The data comes from the newly-published Jersey Household Spending 2021 / 2022 report and is taken from the results of the Jersey Living Costs and Household Income survey.

It was interrupted during Covid, and reflects the impact of the pandemic and the more recent increases in inflation and mortgage interest rates.

The cost of transport, such as putting fuel in a car or buying bus fares, was the second largest outgoing, with £112 a week being spent by households.

The weekly food shop cost an average of £101 in 2021, up from £86 seven years earlier.

Despite the rise in most categories, when adjusted for inflation household spending was down 3%

The lowest average weekly spending was £389, with people in the highest 5% of income spending an average £1,799.

People living in social housing spend the least amount of money (£436), but families who own their own homes spending the most, an average £1,457 per week.

£901 per week means the average household spends £46,852 a year.
