Indefinite treatment order for man who stabbed shop manager

A shop worker in Jersey who repeatedly stabbed his manager in a ‘shocking and unprovoked’ attack will be detained indefinitely under a mental health treatment order.

Trevor Green, 56, denied attempting to murder 35-year-old Katarzyna Czochara at Morrisons at Castle Quay in November 2023.

The Royal Court heard expert evidence that Green suffers from a form of psychosis and so ruled that he be remanded to a secure facility in the UK for reasons of public safety.

Armed police were deployed to the Morrisons Daily store on the St Helier Waterfront on the afternoon of Saturday 18 November 2023 to reports of a stabbing inside the shop.

Ms Czochara was discovered badly wounded. Her attacker had fled the scene.

Police vehicles could be seen lining the road outside the shop, along with a forensics tent.

Inspector Lawrence Courtness, Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) on the case says:

"Today’s order from the court relates to what was a shocking and unprovoked violent attack on Mrs. Kasia Czochara by a colleague.

"Kasia and her family continue to grapple with the traumatic events of that day and the severe injuries that nearly claimed her life.

"The States of Jersey Police extend our heartfelt gratitude to Kasia and her family for their cooperation and resilience throughout this challenging process.

"I’d like to take this opportunity to reassure the general public that this was an isolated incident and knife crime in our Island remains rare."
