Islander saved from 'smoke-filled flat' after smoke alarm alerts neighbours

Two firefighters saved a woman from a 'smoke-filled flat' caused by unattended cooking.

Her neighbours called 999 when they heard her smoke alarm yesterday afternoon (7 April 2025), near Snow Hill, allowing firefighters to react quickly.

The emergency service personnel put on their breathing apparatus and found the woman, who was suffering from smoke inhalation.

Station Commander Paul McGrath says unattended cooking is an all-too-common cause of domestic fires.

"Please do not put yourself or anyone else at risk by leaving cooking unattended.

"This incident also highlights the importance of how a working smoke detector can alert those nearby to a fire before it takes hold.

"Thanks to the actions of the neighbours in this case, the amount of damage to the property was greatly reduced and prevented a more serious incident from occurring."

Paramedics took her to the hospital after delivering care at the scene.
