Jersey Air Display urges islanders to donate to secure the show

Following another funding cut, the organisers of the Jersey International Air Display are asking island to donate towards staging the free show.

The team is £20,000 worse off than last year, receiving a grant of £40,000 towards the this year's display.

Organiser Mike Higgins says they need £90,000 in funding to continue the tradition and ensure younger generations do not miss out on the iconic day on the island's calendar.

"One thing the public doesn't realise is that 70% of the money spent was spent in the island last year, so it's going to island business.

We did a survey last year, and we believe £1.5m was injected into the economy by visitors to the island who came to see the air display.  The money we are spending on the air display is not only for the enjoyment of islanders and visitors, but it is also boosting our economy."

"Since COVID-19 we've had all sorts of restrictions and not had the funding to do what we needed to do.

"We want to try and bring it back, so that new generations of islanders can enjoy what we have had in the past."

A similar plea was issued by the team last, year. It was feared the air display would again be unable to fly.

The Jersey Air Display hopes that if each spectator donates £5 ahead of the display they could afford the day through crowdfunding.
