Jersey Marks Holocaust Memorial Day

Wreaths are being laid in Jersey for Holocaust Memorial Day.

Today (27 January) marks the 77th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.

Six million innocent men, women and children lost their lives during the Holocaust.

The anniversary is observed with a service at the Lighthouse Memorial on the New North Quay (12.45pm), which remembers all victims of persecution and genocide.

The monument honours the 21 islanders died in German camps and prisons during the Second World War.

The commemoration is usually followed by a ceremony at the Occupation Tapestry Gallery, but it has been moved to the Town Church for Covid reasons (1.15pm).

This year’s guest speaker is former actor, gay rights activist and politician Baron Cashman of Limehouse.
