Jersey Zoo's white-winged ducks become some of the most important in Europe

One of the world's rarest ducks, that live in Jersey, is now critically endangered.

A pair of Southeast Asian white-winged ducks living at Jersey Zoo has become one of the most important in Europe.

Durrell hopes to see the ducks - part of the European Endangered Species Programme - breeding this year.

The critically endangered ducks have been living at the zoo since the 1970s.

The IUCN Red List update includes white-winged ducks due to the sharp decline in their numbers due to habitat loss, hunting, and disturbance.

Only 150 to 400 mature birds are left in the wild.
