Man (71) Hit By Car Died Of Multiple Injuries

A pensioner died of multiple injuries after he was hit by a car on Queen’s Road last summer.

An inquest heard 71 year old John Reidy suffered multi-organ failure, which was exacerbated by pre-existing pulmonary and heart disease.

Mr Reidy was travelling to the shop on 4th August 2017 when he was hit by a Peugot 205.

He landed on the pavement and was taken straight to hospital for emergency treatment.

Despite being conscious on arrival, Mr Reidy then suffered a cardiac arrest and died in the intensive care unit four days later.

Witness statements read out stated that the car wasn’t speeding, but didn’t appear to slow down.

The man driving the car, Christopher Francis Blackwell, admitted causing death by driving without due care and attention in Jersey’s Magistrate’s Court on 23 March 2018.

He was sentenced to 120 hours of community service and banned from driving for four years.

Advocate Cyril Whelan gave his condolences to the family, including Mr Reidy’s wife who attended the inquest.
