Plea After Strimmer Fatally Injures Hedgehog

We're being urged to take care when strimming hedges, after a hedgehog had to be put to sleep over the weekend.

It was the first of this year to be fatally injured by garden equipment.

The Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group says last year's branchage was the worst year it ever had - which included 30 having to be put to sleep in one month.

Group Secretary Dru Burdon is urging people to check hedges first before starting work, to stop a repeat of 2018.

"It was probably just a glancing blow from the strimmer and they probably didn't even know they'd done it.

"It just so happens that if you get a hedgehog's nose, then the hedgehog is often put to sleep because there is nothing the vets can do as their noses are so delicate."
