Police Getting Domestic Abuse Training

A UK-based charity is in Jersey training local police officers in how to identify and deal with domestic abuse.

SafeLives is using victim and offender case-studies to help front-line staff design strategies on how to break the cycle.

Its Domestic Abuse Matters package for forces is said to have greatly improved the way UK police are addressing the crime and supporting victims.

The training focuses on how to identify coercive and controlling behaviour

Police Sergeant Paul Smith says officers often come into contact with victims and perpetrators at an early stage without realising it:

"If we can identify the signs early then we can work alongside our partner agencies to support victims and confront the perpetrator's behaviour."

14% of reported crime in Jersey is associated with domestic abuse.
