A group of politicians is demanding a fresh pay offer for the public sector workforce
A letter signed by seven States Members to the Chief Minister (as head of the States Employment Board) and to the unions, is urging both sides to make efforts to 'resolve the current unacceptable impasse'.
It comes after several politicians joined protesters in the Royal Square during a two day walkout by civil servants.
I was proud to speak to everyone gathered in the Royal Square this afternoon. The public sector pay claims are justified and reasonable, so I give those on strike, my full support. pic.twitter.com/p8V5L3ltxj

Pleased to speak in support of our public services today. Let's end the philosophy of austerity. pic.twitter.com/aMuYtMYD8S

View from the States as workers gather in the Royal Square. You have my support - a cost of living increase is a reasonable request. We need to address the huge salaries at the higher end however. pic.twitter.com/kagWhiadxu

I was pleased to have addressed our civil servants who are on strike today. As I said, we need to find a compromise (particularly the SEB) to find a solution. The current situation is not acceptable. pic.twitter.com/tXxbJohYee

PROUD: I was extremely proud to stand up to address this HUGE crowd of islanders who have equally stood up for their rights. As I said to them all, every person matters & we must pull together as the unfairness & concerns are real & belong to all of us. Change comes from Hope ✌🏻 pic.twitter.com/r4clkeInyk

Fully supportive of public sector employees who were on strike today. Glad to have to opportunity to stand with them and show them that there are many politicians on their side, despite the failings and ignorance of those in power. pic.twitter.com/7SvOWOpVjX

SEB Chair Senator John Le Fondre has refused to bow to demands to better pay rises.
The bitter row is exposing a split within the States Assembly, and the Council of Ministers.
Senator Sam Mezec, Minister for Housing and Children, spoke at the rally and posted this message on Facebook:
"I was pleased to address public sector workers in the Royal Square this afternoon. My full solidarity with those who come together to demonstrate in support of our public services. We must now enter meaningful negotiations with the Trade Unions. This is too important for the well being of our Island to treat it with the intransigence there has been so far."
