Rallying Call To Support Skate Park Plans

Supporters of a new skate park at Les Quennevais are being urged to submit comments as part of a new consultation running for the next fortnight.

A few changes have been made to the plans following concerns, including around noise levels, that were raised by people living nearby.

There have been also been a few comments in opposition because of the choice of location.

160 comments have been made to the planning application in total, with the majority of them in support.

Daco Fernandes from the Jersey Skateparks Association says they've gone the extra mile to make sure they're in the best possible position for success.

"The issues we are trying to deal with are any sort of complaints that have been raised, just through the normal planning process and the department is doing everything possible to mitigate any of those issues, so we've got a pretty bulletproof case to be fair.

"There's a whole myriad of things that we have to make sure that all the t's are crossed and all the i's are dotted just to make sure everything is bang on so there's no recourse from the public."

The application was due to come before the Planning Committee earlier this month, but it's been pushed back so the plans could be revised.

It's hoped the green light can be given to the project before Christmas, so construction work can start in the new year.

The consultation is running until 2 November.

Mr. Fernandes says the more comments, the better, and such a facility will only help to find more talent on-island.

"There's a lot of support out there for the park and this is the perfect time for that to be known so we're just hoping we can encourage everyone to make sure they actually get their message across because this is such a desired project and it's wanted by so many different people across the whole island of all different backgrounds and it just needs to happen.

"If we can keep pushing that support, that's the most critical thing for us to do at this stage."

Informal comments have also been submitted by some young skaters - including 8-year-old Joel, and 7-year-old Maisie, 12-year old Fred, and Xavier who is 4.

Comments on the project can be submitted here.

Work on submitting an application to build a skate park at South Hill Gardens is ongoing.
