Review of ADHD prescriptions for Jersey adults

Adults with ADHD are being invited to share their thoughts on how drugs to treat the condition are being prescribed in Jersey.

A scrutiny panel has begun a review of the current procedures for prescribing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder medication.

Politicians are concerned after it has revealed in March that just one person in the island - a consultant psychiatrist - can sign off ADHD drugs to patients.

The panel heard that is resulting in them spending ‘an extraordinary amount of their time just doing repeat prescriptions.’

Deputy Louise Doublet hopes this will lead to positive change:

"The service is a bit overwhelmed.  The panel would like to see whether there are any recommendations we could make to support that consultant in the work they are doing, and support the department to deliver and improve service.

The panel is concern that the current situation is impacting staff and those who need regular ADHD care.  It wants to hear from anyone willing to share their experience:

"The panel is seeking evidence from adults who either have a diagnosis of ADHD, or who may already be on the waiting which is very long - there are 736 adults on the waiting list.  Even, there may be adults who may be fairly certain that they have this condition and are already aware of the impact on their life.

"We will also be looking at the impact of any issues or delays around prescriptions, the medication shortages and what impact that is having on patient health and wellbeing."

Members of the public who wish to share their views can make a submission via email (scrutiny@gov.je) or by writing to the Health and Social Security Panel at Morier House, Halkett Place, St Helier, JE1DD.
