Skate Park To Open 'Mid-December'

Jersey's new skate park at Les Quennevais is now due to open in mid-December.

The £1.8 million park was initially expected to be completed by May, then July, and then mid-October.

Delays have been caused by late tweaks to the design, and then by difficulties getting materials to the island.

Sports Minister Deputy Lucy Stephenson says we're now looking at completion of mid-December.

"That's to do with logistics around supply of materials.  There is a lot going on in the world at the moment, and it is having an impact.  We are not immune to that.

It would be silly to provide any guarantees, but certainly the team are working really hard on it.  The site is looking really good.  It is getting there.  It is nearing completion and I am really excited for people to be able to start using it."

A further £1.2 million has been set aside in the Government Plan for future skate park facilities in other parts of the island.

"Although the skate park at Les Quennevais is hopefully going to be the jewel-in-the-crown of our facilities, there are some other exciting opportunities with skating going on.  We are still looking at South Hill.  There is also going to be a trial of skate-friendly furniture in Millennium Town Park - staring in the next few months.  And we are still looking at options for potential satellite facilities around the island."

After years of campaigning, a skate park at Les Quennevais was given planning permission in November 2021.

Skateboarders, supporters, officers and politicians gathered at the sports centre in February for a 'spade in the ground' event to mark the start of building work.
