Treasury Minister Rules Out Standing For Re-Election

Jersey's Treasury Minister says she doesn't plan on standing for re-election.

Deputy Susie Pinel was first elected to represent the parish of St Clement in 2011.

During her time in office, she has also served as the Assistant Social Security Minister.

In a statement released on Tuesday morning, she says she plans to spend more time with her family:

"I feel strongly that my time at Social Security as Assistant Minister and then Minister and my work as Treasury Minister have been productive and responsive in what have been some controversial and difficult periods.

I now need to spend time with my family."

During her time as Treasury Minister, Deputy Pinel has overseen government finances during the Brexit transition period and the Covid-19 pandemic.

She also saw all islanders moved off the old Prior-Year system for paying their taxes in arrears as well as reforms to Jersey's 'archaic' tax system which means married women will no longer have to declare their earnings on their husband's tax returns.

Deputy Pinel says she won't be stepping back from politics altogether, and plans to support Jersey Alliance candidates during June's General Election:

"Being a founder member of the Jersey Alliance, I will be actively supporting the party candidates in the election, especially those in my home parish of St. Clement.

The teams I have had the pleasure of working with at Social Security and Treasury and of course in the Parish Hall in St. Clement have been brilliant, diligent and supportive.

A huge thank you to my family and friends who have been beside me in all three elections and during the good and challenging times of being in office."

Outside of politics, she plans to continue working as a painting and fine art conservator - a job she did before her time in the States Assembly.
