Trio of World War II mines spruced up after 27 years of sea battering

Three World War II Shipwrecked Mariners Society collection mines have seen a lick of paint and a few repairs.

With their attractive new look, the trio of fund-raising mines have been given a new lease of life in Gorey, West Park and St Helier Marina.

Honorary Shipwrecked Mariners Society Agent, Captain Bob Asplet, and his wife Norma, have dedicated the past 27 years of their lives to servicing the mines.

They'e collected more than £8,500 since records began in 2000.

However, due to ill health, Bob has had to stand down.

Former Harbour Master, Captain Brian Nibbs RD, took the reigns temporarily whilst a new Honorary Agent was appointed.

Ports of Jersey's Harbour Master, Captain Bill Sadler, offered Marine Apprentice Adam Hart's services to bring the mines back to a gleaming condition, in between his other duties.

Brian Nibbs says he has done an excellent job:

"Liaising with Captain Bill Sadler, Fleur and Adam has been so straightforward.

"Their collective ‘let’s get it done’ attitude has been most refreshing and with Howard now appointed, the mines and their collecting ability are in safe hands for the foreseeable future."

Another former Harbour Master, Captain Howard Le Cornu, has accepted the position as Honorary Agent and will be keeping an eye on the mines in future.

One of the mines, at St Helier Marina, is only 50 yards away from his office, meaning he will be able to keep a close eye on it.

Chief Executive of the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society, Capt. Justin Osmond RN, says they are extremely grateful.

"The mines are looking resplendent and we’re sure they will continue to collect much needed funds to support the Society’s work on behalf of the seafaring community for many years to come.

"Thanks to Captain Brian Nibbs who arranged the refurbishment project with Ports of Jersey."
