Unattended cooking sparked a fire at a flat in St Helier on Monday morning (14 October)

15 firefighters attended a flat in Halkett Place at around 9am, after passers-by heard a smoke alarm and saw smoke coming from the building.

Two pumps were sent, and a third was later dispatched while on-call firefighters were called in to the station to provide back up.

Crews were unable to get in through the entrance and had to use a ladder to get in through a first floor window.

Once inside, they found a fire in the kitchen.

The occupant was led to safety and treated at the scene by paramedics.

The Fire Service has thanked the members of the public who called 999.
