Vice Admiral Jerry Kyd: From Sea To Shore

Channel 103 met Jersey's new Lieutenant Governor, Vice Admiral Jerry Kyd, to see how he is settling into his new role, and the island.

It has been a week since Vice Admiral Jerry Kyd was sworn-in to assume his new role as Lieutenant Governor and Jersey's first representative of King Charles III.

After receiving a very warm welcome from the islanders, it was straight to work for the former Fleet Commander.

"We've nearly unpacked all our boxes in our new house.

We’ve just been struck by the warmth of the Jersey welcome.  To be here is a great honour and a privilege, particularly being His Majesty's representative.  It’s fantastic."

His Excellency says he has not had much chance to visit a lot of the island yet, but knows the waters very well from his time in the navy.

Vice Admiral Kyd moved to Jersey with his wife, Karen, who is a GP with an extensive background in medicine.

Talking to us about his family, the new LG said his career on the Royal Navy meant he spent long periods away from his four sons as they were growing up.

He is looking forward to them coming to the island at Christmas and in the summer.

"It'll be absolutely wonderful. They have already visited the island, and obviously love it. They are looking forward to the beaches and surfing at St.Ouen’s Bay I think more than anything else."

Vice Admiral Jerry Kyd says the island shares many qualities with Devon, from the lovely lanes, to the widespread agriculture.

" Jersey has so much going for it. It is a confident, ambitious, vibrant island, with an amazing population. Yes, life is not always easy, but my word, what a beautiful place to live."
