Warning Over Driving Licences

Nearly 5,000 Jersey driving licences that are due to expire in a matter of days are yet to be renewed.

Fines for driving without a valid licence or insurance start at £300 and could lead to a driving ban.

An expired licence would also make your insurance invalid, with a maximum penalty of each offence at £10,000.

More than 20,000 licences have been renewed in the last three months, but many drivers are still leaving it to the last minute.

Chairman of the Comité des Chefs de Police, Centenier Danny Scaife, says its not worth going to court over.

"People will get stopped in road checks, they will be stopped in routine police checks, they will be asked to produce their licence and that's when they'll discover it's out of date and they will be breaking the law.

"Even though the vast majority of people won't be deliberately doing this, they need to check their licence ASAP, they really do."

Parishes are dealing with applications in the date order received but, to avoid a delay, applications can be made up to 3 months before the licence expires.
