Week of community action in Jersey to protect the environment

Jersey has joined 'The Great Big Green Week' - a national campaign highlighting climate change and encouraging community action.

Islanders are invited to attend a series of beach cleans, talks and environmental activities organised by the Government of Jersey. 

Take a look at what's going on: 

Saturday June 8: 

  • Circular Celebration - A pop up event on New Street, St Helier from 10:00am - 2:00pm showcasing local businesses and community groups supporting the circular economy including Jersey Repair Cafes, Borrow and Bucket Box and Carry in Cloth. Minister for Infrastructure Constable Andy Jehan will be in attendance.
  • World Oceans Day - At SANDS in St Ouen's Bay from 8:30am - 4:pm, events are taking place educating the community on how they can support ocean conservation.
  • Beach Clean - Islanders are invited to join Littlefeet Environmental in a beach clean at Ouaisné bay at 11:00am. 
  • Insect Count - Jersey Biodiversity Centre will be at Surville Cemetery for an insect count to monitor the island's local environment.

Sunday June 9:

  • The Big Ocean Cleanup - From 9:00am - 2:00pm, snorkelers, divers and paddle-boarders have been invited down to Bouley Bay to help protect and clean the ocean. 
  • Geopark Discovery Day - Free, family-friendly activities are happening from 1:00pm - 5:00pm at Les Laveurs, St Ouen's Bay. Islanders will be able to find out more about geology, join in with some pebble crafts and sand art and learn more about Jersey's landscape.
  • Jersey Trees for Life - A volunteering sessions is taking place at 10:00am at Devil's Hole for those interested in helping remove bracken from around trees, replace broken shelters and prune broken branches.

Monday June 10: 

  • Bracken Cutting - Islanders are invited to Noirmont Point at 9:30am to help control the spread of bracken, with some experienced Rangers. 

Tuesday June 11, Wednesday June 12: 

  • Tour of Jersey's Recycling Facilities: From 5:30pm - 7:00pm on both evenings, islanders are invited for a tour of Jersey's recycling facilities. 

Thursday June 13: 

  • William Bock Talk - at Arthouse Jersey at 6:00pm - 7:00pm, William Bock is teaching islanders about his Green Rope Project. This is the act of twisting together rope from wild, locally harvested plants. 
  • Purple Dew Plant Removal - From 9:30am - 12:30pm, the Government of Jersey’s Biosecurity Team are looking for volunteers to help with the hands-on removal of the invasive plant ‘purple dew plant’ from the Five Mile Road.

Friday June 14: 

  • Sour Fig Control - At Noirmont Point, islanders are being asked to help tackles the invasive species which smothers the native plants in the site. 

Saturday June 15: 

  • Beach Clean - Islanders are invited to join Littlefeet Environmental in a beach clean at Ouaisné bay at 10:00am.

Jane Burns, the government's climate change engagement manager, says there is something going on to suit islanders of all ages and interests:

"It is really meant to be a celebration of community action - really getting people wanting to get involved to help tackle climate change and protect nature."

Environment Minister, Deputy Steve Luce is also supporting the week:

“This week presents great opportunity to celebrate the innovative ways local businesses and community groups are working together to highlight the wider issue of climate change and the biodiversity crisis.

"I’m pleased to see such a variety of events this week, it shows a real community effort and reflects Islanders’ passion for our natural environment”.
