Two Jailed For Money Laundering

Money Launderers Joseph John Reaney (L) and Sean Liam Cooney (R)

Two men who were caught with more than £100k in a boat at Belval have been sentenced to a combined eight years in prison.

29 year old Sean Liam Cooney and Joseph John Reaney (31) were arrested in the early hours of 15 December 2021 after a 'lengthy investigation' by the Jersey Customs and Immigration Service.

They were attempting to export nearly £113,000 in cash in a Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) from Belval cove near St Catherine's under the cover of darkness.

Cooney was sentenced to 5 years in prison, while Reaney is about to begin a jail term of 3 years and 9 months - both for entering into an arrangement which they knew facilitated the possession or control of criminal property.

Senior Manager Luke Goddard says these crimes are a priority to the JCIS.

"This case demonstrates the lengths criminals will go to in order to move the proceeds of their criminal activity and the measures that will be taken by this Service in order to prevent them from doing so.

Undoubtedly the actions of this Service have dismantled a criminal syndicate that was based in the Island."
